What this is

legislations.in publishes the Central Acts of India that are in force, each as a single web page containing the whole Act. Every Act has a linked table of contents and a stable link to each section, so you can cite or share an exact provision.

The same text is available as JSON and Markdown, with bulk downloads of the whole collection, so developers and researchers can build on it without copying pages by hand. See API & data.

Where the text comes from

All text comes from India Code, the repository of Central and State legislation maintained by the Legislative Department of the Ministry of Law and Justice.

India Code publishes each section of an Act as a separate record. We combine those records into complete Acts, identify the structure of each section (sub-sections, clauses, provisos and explanations) and keep the amendment notes that India Code includes. Each Act page shows when its text was retrieved and links to the original record.

Disclaimer

This is not an official publication and it has no legal authority. The authoritative text of an Act is the one published in the Gazette of India. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

The text is processed automatically. Every Act is checked before it is published, but errors can still occur. Always verify a provision against the Gazette of India before relying on it.

How accuracy is checked

Each Act receives a score between 0 and 1 from checks that can be measured:

  • every section has text;
  • section numbers run in order;
  • the number of sections matches what the source declares;
  • sub-sections and clauses are nested correctly.

Acts that score below 0.85 are not shown as full text. Their pages show the Act's details and a notice instead, and they are listed on the coverage page, so gaps are visible rather than hidden.

Section 52(1)(q) of the Copyright Act, 1957 permits the reproduction and publication of Acts of a legislature, subject to the conditions set out in that section.

Report an error

If the text of a provision here differs from the Gazette of India, that is an error worth reporting. Write to [email protected] and include the name of the Act, the section number and what the correct text should be. A link to the section helps most of all.
